Lacoste is a high-end apparel company which was founded in 1933 with a range covering clothing, footwear, leather goods and more. The company is recognised by its green crocodile logo. René Lacoste founded the company in 1933 alongside André Gillier, who was the owner of the largest French knitwear manufacturing firm at the time. Together they began to produce the revolutionary tennis shirt which the company claims as the first example of a brand name appearing on the outside of an article of clothing.
In 1951 Lacoste expanded from tennis white shirts and introduced colour designs. In 1952, the shirts were exported to the USA and advertised as ‘the status symbol of the competent sportsman’ and in 1963 Bernard Lacoste took over the management of the company from his father René. The company went from strength to strength and his enjoyed a surge in popularity more recently due to French designer Christophe Lemaire’s creating a more modern, upscale look and contracts with several sports stars such as Andy Roddick.
